Frances E. Gonzales, 91

Our beloved mother, Frances E. Gonzales, peacefully passed away Saturday, September 16, 2017 in her home, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born February 12, 1926 in Denver, Colorado and brought home by her loving parents, Jose Teodoro and Leonardita Roybal, and older brother Steve to settle in Costilla County.

She grew up and became a teacher, thus beginning her lifelong passion for loving children. She taught school in La Garita, Colorado for four years. She then taught at the original Fort Garland School where she met her beloved husband Tom A. Gonzales. They married August 29, 1953 and had eight children. Eight children did not seem to be enough for Frances, so she began babysitting. Her house was filled with her children, nieces, nephews, her children’s friends, and the children she babysat. She loved them all unconditionally. Through the years, her home continued to be filled by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, all treasured.

In 1995 Frances found her biological family. Although her birth parents had preceded her in death, on her father’s side she found 3 siblings and on her mother’s side, 5 siblings. She cherished the times she spent with her new family.

Frances was a member of the Sacred Heart Society for many years and enjoyed fellowship there. In her later years she really enjoyed good food and good company, spending much of her time at her son’s restaurant (All-Gon) in Fort Garland.
