Frederick R. Gutirrez

Frederick R. Gutirrez, 83, a long-time Alamosa resident, passed away April 29, 2019 at the Spanish Peaks Veterans Community Living Center.  Fred was 83 and was born in Denver on August 9, 1935 to Sam Gutirrez and Angelina Romero.  Part way through high school, he joined the Navy in 1951, serving as Ordinance Officer aboard the American destroyer, the U.S.S. Rowan.  Fred considered his time in the Navy his greatest time in life.  He was seriously injured on the island of Kwajalein (Marshall Islands) in 1958, and received an honorable discharge, but his injuries left him fully disabled.  Fred did not let his disabilities keep him from his great love of fishing, hunting and camping.  He moved to the San Luis Valley in 1991.  He had a strong personal faith in Jesus, and was always hopeful in every situation, and He considered every chance meeting as an opportunity to make a friend.  Fred Gutirrez will be remembered, by those who knew him, for his friendliness and generosity.
