Free presentation features Autobees

FORT GARLAND — On Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the Mess Hall at Fort Garland Museum & Cultural Center, George Autobee will give a presentation on Charles Autobees.

Charles Autobees was a fur trapper, trader, interpreter, military scout, frontiersman, whiskey peddler and town founder. The army hired Charles Autobees to build Fort Garland in 1857.  Autobees oversaw a crew of 159 soldiers and local laborers skilled in making adobe bricks.  When Autobees was stabbed by a laborer, he turned over his foreman duties to his half-brother Tom Tobin until he recovered from his wound.

George Autobees is a descendent of the Charles Autobees and was the editor of the book ‘The Life and Times of Charles Autobees 1812-1882.”
