Fuelwood available in New Mexico

TAOS, NM — With the absence of significant snow and an abundance of wood, the public can now get fuelwood at Canjilon Lakes through a dead and down permit. Folks can use existing dead and down permits or purchase one for $20 for five cords at any of the Carson National Forest offices. The permits are good through December 31.

The fuelwood area contains mostly Aspen trees that were cut over the past year. The wood has been decked in piles along the road for easy access and to eliminate the need for fuelwood gatherers to drive off of paved roads. The Forest office asks that the public collect their wood from the decked piles and not from the smaller slash piles.

The Canjilon Lakes area will only be open for fuelwood harvesting and will not be open for any other use including hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, etc. Access will only be provided to individuals with dead and down permits. Weather conditions can change at any time. In the event of significant snowfall and/or icy road conditions, the fuelwood area may be closed prior to or during this time.
