Gilbert John Gallegos, Sr., longtime resident of San Rafael, Colorado, died at his beloved home on March 8, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Nov.12, 1932, in Ortiz, Colorado – the son of Otoniel and Elvira Velasquez-Gallegos. He attended Menaul School in Albuquerque, NM, and earned degrees from Adams State College and the University of Northern Colorado. He had a successful career in education as a teacher, coach, superintendent of schools, and also as a rancher. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division and was involved in several community and area boards and organizations.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 60 years, Julia Gallegos, and son Gilbert Gallegos, Jr. (Bino). He is survived by his daughter Lawanna (Chris) Duran, Albuquerque, NM; Brothers: Isaac (Mary) Gallegos, Antonito, CO; Robert (Michelle) Gallegos, Menifee, CA; and Robert and Orlinda Taylor, Antonito, CO. Grandchildren include: Jonathan Gallegos, Jared Gallegos, Justin Gallegos, Joel Gallegos, Kallyn Duran, and Dylan Duran. He is also survived by several beloved great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A prayer service will be held on Mon. March 11, 2019, at 6:00 p.m. at Romero Chapel in Alamosa, CO; and a funeral service is scheduled at the Capulin Assembly of God Church, in Capulin, CO, on Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at 1:00p.m. Interment will takes place at the La Jara Cemetery in La Jara, CO.
