Hamrick named new Sports Editor at Valley Courier

ALAMOSA — The Valley Courier is pleased to announce that Ken Hamrick will be the new sports editor.

Hamrick has approximately 40 years of experience in newspaper and sports information. He comes to Alamosa from La Junta where he was the sports and education reporter. He worked at the La Junta Tribune-Democrat from 2010-21.

While at La Junta, he covered six state championship teams including state football titles for La Junta High School in 2016 and 2018 and a state softball title for the same school in 2014. He also covered state championships for Rocky Ford High school including wrestling in 2015 and 2017, and a state softball title in 2016.

Prior to La Junta, Hamrick worked at the Sheridan Press in Sheridan, Wyo., as the sports editor from 2006-10. While in Sheridan, he covered several state championship teams, mainly in girls basketball and volleyball and a state football title for Sheridan High School in 2009.

He was at the La Junta Tribune-Democrat for a previous stint from 2004-06. He covered a state girls basketball championship for McClave in 2005 and a state baseball championship for Las Animas in 2005.

Prior to his first time at La Junta, Hamrick was the sports editor at the Canon City Daily Record from 2000-02. He covered Canon City High School’s state football championship in 2000.

He was also a stringer at newspapers in Greeley and Loveland, and for the Arizona Republic.

Hamrick began his career in sports information at Phoenix College in Arizona. He then worked in the sports information department at Northern Arizona University while working on his Bachelor’s degree in journalism. He then went to the University of Northern Colorado as a graduate assistant. where he earned his Master’s Degree in sports administration.

He returned t0 UNC in 1996 and worked with the school’s first national football championship.

Hamrick is a fan of the Phoenix Suns and the St. Louis Cardinals. He also follows Colorado’s professional teams.
