Head-on crash claims Monte Vista woman

Melissa Chacon, 46, of Monte Vista was killed in a head-on crash west of Alamosa just before 5 p.m. Friday.

 ALAMOSA– A 46-year-old Monte Vista woman was killed and a 23-year-old woman, also from Monte Vista, was seriously injured in a head-on collision west of here just before 5 p.m. Friday.

Melissa Chacon died at the scene near milepost 27 on Highway 160 when her westbound Hyundai Elantra collided with an eastbound Jeep Cherokee driven by Faith Pacheco. Pacheco suffered serious injuries and was transported to SLV Health before being flown to a higher trauma center.

According to the Colorado State Patrol, the Hyundai drifted off the north edge of the road and them completely into the eastbound lane, its front left impacting the Jeep’s front left. After impact, the Hyundai Elantra rotated counter-clockwise 360 degrees coming to final rest facing west blocking the westbound lane and the Jeep Cherokee rotated counter-clockwise 180 degrees traveling off the south edge of the roadway and coming to final rest facing west along the dirt roadside.

Highway 160 was closed in both directions for a couple of hours, diverting traffic onto adjoining dirt roads creating severe congestion and a lot of dust.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
