ALAMOSA — The Alamosa County Sheriff's Office is reporting an "in custody death," which occurred in the Detention Facility on Sunday. Deputies discovered the incident at approximately 12:20 a.m. Sunday morning. The deceased is an inmate and local resident identified as 34-year-old Anthony Espinoza.
In May Espinoza was in court but unshackled for a trial on an officer assault charge and he became agitated over a development that might cause a delay in the start of the trial. When court security tried to remove him, he allegedly fought with them, kicking one of them and spitting on another. The incident brought new officer assault charges against him and forced the district court to call a mistrial. In June he argued with Alamosa County Judge Daniel Walzl.
The Alamosa County Coroner is handling the case with the autopsy scheduled for Monday afternoon in Colorado Springs. The Alamosa County Sheriff's Office as well as the Colorado Bureau of Investigation are also involved in the case.
According to Alamosa County Coroner Kevin Rogers, the next of kin have been notified. Further information will be made public as it becomes available.
