Joe I. Montoya


Longtime Fort Garland resident Joe I. Montoya, 87, died August 28, 2021, at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center in Alamosa. 

Joe’s life began on August 7, 1934, in Mesitas, Colorado the proud son of Juan Francisco Montoya and Vicentita Chavez Montoya their fifth child of 15 children.  He married the love of his life Orlinda R. Segura on November 7, 1955, in San Luis, Colorado and together they built their family home, one adobe at a time, and enjoyed 65 years together.

Joe owned and operated several businesses throughout the years including his fuel station, automotive repair shop, a trucking company, and a restaurant.  He was a master of many trades and had a very mechanical and engineering mind.  He designed and built many items, such as a wooden framed go-kart using a straight rod as the steering mechanism.  Later, he built a motorcycle, which we called the “Tote Gote.”

He also loved spending time with his family, especially his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. 

Joe is survived by his loving wife Orlinda Montoya, his children Joey (Marian) Montoya, Dave (Yayu) Montoya, Cathy Chairez, all of Fort Garland, CO, Carolyn Montoya (Gary Cucarola) of Arvada, CO, Robert (Donna) Montoya of Northglenn, CO and Terry Montoya of Denver, CO; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, his siblings Gloria Maes of Fort Garland, CO, Priscilla (Pat) Bradley of New York, Donald Montoya of Pueblo, CO, Madeline (Jim) White of Denver, CO, Inez, Gonzalez (Raul Minchaca) of Fort Garland and Anthony (Barbara) Montoya of Rio Rancho, NM; Gloria Montoya of Everett, Washington, Beverly Montoya of Santa Fe, NM; his in-laws Olivia Martinez of Fort Garland, Marie (Jim) Romero, Wilma (Michael) Vialpando of Denver, Joan Najera of Pueblo, CO; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

Joe is preceded in death by his parents Juan and Vicentita, his siblings Ignacita Montoya Rael, Estrelia Montoya, Adelina Montoya Segura, Orlando Montoya, Larry Montoya, Gilbert Montoya, Alfredo Serafin (Fred) Montoya, Amadeo Pedro (Pete) Montoya, and granddaughter, Marivel Chairez and his son-in-law, Baldomero Manuel Chairez.

Services will be held Saturday, September 4, 2021, beginning with a Visitation from 9:00-10:00 a.m.  followed by a Vigil with Recitation of the Rosary at 10:00 a.m. and a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Mission Church in Fort Garland.  Interment will follow services in the Fort Garland Cemetery.
