John C. Mondragon

Antonito resident John C. Mondragon “Whimpy”, 79, went home to be with the Lord on June 29, 2021. He passed away peacefully at his home. John was welcomed into the world on October 24, 1941, the son of Nicolas Mondragon and Rosita Salazar. John was a people person, who loved working with the Antonito Housing Authority as a maintenance man and working with Tony Gonnell as a plumber assistant. He enjoyed his daily interactions with the people in the community. In his free time, he enjoyed taking care of his sister Julia Garcia’s yard. He had lots of pride doing. He will be dearly missed.

Survivors include his daughters Brenda (Emery) Lucero of Hanover, CO; Michelle Mondragon of Colorado Springs, CO; sons Nicolas (Brenda) Mondragon of Antonito, CO; Jesse Mondragon of Antonito, CO; sisters Julia Garcia of Antonito, CO; Helen (Jim) Bohr of Galt, CA;  Louisa (Ed) Rose of Galt, CA; niece Eleanor West of Alamosa, CO; grandchildren Emery Lucero of Sun City, CA; Aaron and Brandon Mondragon of Antonito, CO; Christopher, Angelique, Gabrielle Ruybal Sebastian Mondragon and Michelle’s kids. Special friend Nora Jaramillo and her children. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents Nicolas Mondragon and Rosita Salazar, brothers Frank and Fred Aragon, Rudy Salazar, Ruben Lee Mondragon, grandchildren Alexandra Mondragon and Brian Mondragon.

Viewing and visitation will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, from 11:30-12:30 PM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos. A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Saturday, July 10, 2021, at 12:30 PM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos. A Mass of the Resurrection will follow at 1:00 PM also at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Ortiz Cemetery.
