Jolene Sue Kubat-Unlaub


Jolene Sue Kubat-Unlaub, 66, passed away peacefully at the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte, Colorado on October 25, 2022. 

Jolene’s life began in Genoa, Nebraska on March 2, 1956, the loving daughter of Robert B. Carnahan and Shirley E. Medlin Carnahan. After moving to the Rio Grande Valley, she married Charles Unlaub on August 30, 2007, and built their cabin outside of Monte Vista, Colorado. 

Jolene was a devoted Surgical Nurse for over 45 years. After receiving her nursing degree from Methodist School of Nursing in Kearney, Nebraska in 1977, she went on to work at Creighton University Medical Center-St. Joseph’s Hospital in Omaha. In 2006 she began working at the Rio Grande Hospital in Del Norte where she retired from in 2021. In her younger days Jo was a winning champion barrel racer traveling all over the country to various rodeos.  This love affair with horses carried on to Monte Vista with her horse Julio and many others.

In her spare time Jolene loved to bake and enjoy her porch view of hummingbirds and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.  Jolene especially loved her friendship with her coworkers, retired nurse friends and her Rimrock neighbors.

Jolene is survived by her husband Charles Unlaub of the family home in Monte Vista; her brother Fred (Sheila) Carnahan of Kearney, NE; her sister-in-law Emily (Ed) Nolte of Amarillo, TX; her nephews Geoffrey (Christina) Carnahan, Noel (Brittney) Carnahan both of Kearny, NE; her nieces Rikki (Brad) Hanson, Tory (Justin) Dees both of Amarillo, TX; Candy (Tim) Schumaker of Fountain, CO and 8 great nieces and nephews

Jolene is preceded in death by her parents and stepmother Phyllis Hastings Carnahan.

A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 5, 2022, at the Rogers Family Mortuary, located at 404 Morris Street in Monte Vista.
