Monte Vista resident Jose Gilbert Maestas, 88, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2017 at the Conejos County Hospital with his loving family by his side. Jose was born on September 3, 1928 in Capulin, Colorado, the son of Esmael Maestas and Doloritas Romero Maestas. He worked as a heavy equipment Operator for Rio Grande County for many years. Jose was an exceptional father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend who enjoyed playing pool, going arrow head hunting, camping and spending time with his family and friends. He will be dearly missed by those who knew him.

Survivors include his children Leroy (Donna) Maestas of Monte Vista, CO; Johnny (Kathy) Maestas of Monte Vista, CO; Cynthia (Eric) Gustafson of Creede, CO; Minnie Quintana and Melody Quintana both of Alamosa, CO; Siblings Tina (Ambrosio) Mondragon Jr., of Weaverly, CO; Frances (Roy) Hall of Colorado Springs, CO; John (Louella) Maestas of Antonito, CO; Adelmo (Helen) Maestas of Albion, ID; Floyd (Terri) Maestas of Farmington, NM; Bernal (Connie) Maestas of Alamosa, CO; Trinidad (Nancy) Maestas of La Jara, CO; and one sister-in-law Emily Maestas of Albion, ID. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jose was preceded in death by his parents Esmael and Doloritas Maestas, wife Lydia Maestas, daughter Patricia Maestas, grandson Jeremy Maestas, great-grandson Aiden Marquez, great-granddaughter Mercedes Salazar, brothers Eddie Maestas Ben Maestas and sister Sara Valdez.

Cremation was chosen. A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Wednesday, August 30, 2017  at 7:00 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista. A Memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2017  at 10:00 AM also at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at the Capulin Cemetery. The care of arrangements have been entrusted to Romero Funeral Home of Monte Vista.
