Longtime Antonito resident Josie Romero, 97, was called home to be with the Lord on March 27, 2023. She passed away peacefully at her home with her loving family by her side. Josie was welcomed into the world on January 25, 1926 in Los Ojos, New Mexico, the daughter of Tomas Vialpando and Eutimia Maria Ulibarri Vialpando. Josie devoted her life to caring for her family, she was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. In her free time, she enjoyed cooking, crocheting, reading and absolutely loved and cherished the time she was able to spend with her grandchildren.

Josie was preceded in death by her parents, loving husband Lawrence Romero, sons Bob Atencio, Jimmy Atencio, Chuck Atencio, and daughters Maxine Romero and Jane Gregory.

She will be forever missed and remembered by her daughter Linda Atencio of Antonito, CO; son Ted (Liz) Atencio of Centennial, CO; 17 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great-grandchildren, sisters Alice Sweet of Arvada, CO; Arleen (Leon) Bender of Alaska; brothers Alfred (Sara) Vialpando of Rio Rancho, NM; Herman Vialpando of Los Ojos, NM. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Sunday, April 2, 2023, at 7:00 pm at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos.  Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, April 3, 2023, at 11:00 am also at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.
