Lady Grizzlies roll to win over Westminster

ALAMOSA – Five Adams State University women’s basketball players scored in double figures as the Lady Grizzlies defeated Westminster (Utah) College 70-55 Friday at Plachy Hall gym.

Ashley Greenwood gave the Lady Griffins an early 5-0 lead, but Kiiyani Anitelu made two free throws for ASU’s first points. Westminster increased the lead to 10-2, but the Lady Grizzlies scored seven straight points to pull within 10-9.

After a Margarita Satini basket increased the lead to three, Harmanie Dominguez drained a 3-point basket, and Elaina Watson drove for a layup to give Adams State its first lead of the game at 14-12.

Greenwood hit a jumper just before the buzzer to tie the score at 14-14 at the end of the first quarter.

Anitelu put the Lady Grizzlies back in front to open the second quarter, but Maley Ballard made a three to put the Lady Griffins back into the lead. Angeline Nageak made a trey for ASU, but Westminster scored four straight points for a 21-19 edge.

Nyeniea John made two free throws to again deadlock the score. After Lyndzi Rich split at the line, Watson scored a layup for a 23-22 ASU lead.

Rich made a layup and added a free throw to give Westminster a 25-23 lead, however, Dominquez drained another 3-pointer to put the Lady Grizz back in front. Darlisha Reed drove for a layup to increase the lead to three, but Rich knocked down a jumper in the final minute to cut the ASU lead to 28-27 at halftime.

Nageak opened the third quarter scoring with a trey, and Reed drove for a layup to extend the lead to 33-27. Rae Falatea accounted for Westminster’s first points of the period, but Watson scored again to again give ASU a six-point advantage.

Westminster cut the lead to 35-33, but Adams State went on a 10-0 run, with Dominguez scoring eight of the points to give the Lady Grizz a double-digit lead at 45-33.

The Lady Griffins close to within 45-38, but Watson scored again before the period expired and ASU led 47-38.

Greenwood scored five points to begin the fourth quarter and cut the deficit to 45-40. The score stood at 49-45 before Adams State scored eight straight points to increase its lead to 57-45.

Westminster got as close as a 10-point deficit, but ASU outscored the Lady Griffins 7-2 in the final 1:20 to preserve the victory.

Dominguez led the Lady Grizzlies with 18 points, followed by Nageak with 14, Reed and Watson both with 11, and Anotelu with 10.

Greenwood led the Lady Griffins with 20 points.

Adams State (13-5, 9-3 RMAC) will play two games in the Denver area next weekend. On Friday, it will play at Metropolitan State University of Denver, and on Saturday the Lady Grizzlies will be in Golden to take on the Colorado School of Mines.
