Lady Mean Moose bounce back with win over Lamar

ALAMOSA – After dropping a tough loss in the season opener against Ellicott on Friday, the Alamosa High School girls basketball team was looking to rebound when it hosted Lamar Saturday at the Alamosa Basketball Challenge.

The Lady Mean Moose were successful in evening their season record as they defeated the Lady Thunder 43-35.

Brooklyn Robbins gave Lamar the early lead by splitting a pair of free throws. But Miranda Geringer put Alamosa in front for good with a 3-point basket.

Charley Higham scored a layup and later added two free throws for a 7-3 Lady Moose lead. Brooke Gonzales also scored a layup, and Mary Masias drained a 3-pointer and she added a free throw to increase the lead to 13-5.

Nadia Morales made two free throws to bring the Lady Thunder within 13-7, however, Morgan Ortega made a trey for a 16-7 Alamosa lead at the end of the first quarter.

Gonzales opened the second quarter with a layup, but Brooklyn Robbins scored four points to help Lamar reduce its deficit to 8-12. Emily Melgoza then made back-to-back baskets, and Ortega made one of two free throws to give the Lady Moose a 23-17 lead at halftime.

Geringer made another three, and Ortega also buried a 3-pointer for a 30-19 Alamosa lead. Taybor Wiedeman also drained a trey, but Lamar scored the final five points of the quarter to close the margin to 33-25.

Alamosa pushed the lead to 35-25 early in the fourth, but Lamar rallied to close to within a 35-31 deficit. However, Gonzales made four free throws, and Sydney Jackson and Melgoza both made layups to give the Lady Mean Moose a 43-35 victory.

Alamosa had a balanced offensive attack which was led by Gonzales who scored nine points. Ortega was next with seven points, and Geringer, Masias and Melgoza each scored six.

Brooklyn Robbins led all scorers with 12 points, and Abby Robbins was next for Lamar with 11.

Alamosa (1-1) will travel to Greeley this weekend for the University Invitational. The Lady Mean Moose will first play DSST: Montview Thursday at 8 p.m.

Ellicott 55, Del Norte 29

The Del Norte High School girls basketball team opened its season on Saturday with a 55-29 loss to Del Norte also at the Alamosa Basketball Challenge.

Melissa Lugo-Hermosillo opened the scoring for the Lady Thunderhawks by making one of two free throws. Alyssa Lagasse and Micheyla Stewart both made 3-pointers to help Ellicott increase its lead to 8-0.

Kayleigh Haynie made one of two at the line to put the Lady Tigers on the board, but Ellicott scored five more points on the board to take a 13-3 lead after the first quarter.

Stewart and Lagasse both made layups to begin the second quarter. Delilah Jones made a layup and added a free throw, and Kayley Wright also drove for a layup for a 22-3 Ellicott lead.

Kelci Madrid split at the line for Del Norte’s first point of the second quarter.

The Lady Thunderhawks led 26-6 at halftime.

Shelby Van Zalinge made a layup and Madrid scored two baskets to help Del Norte close to within 30-12. But Ellicott scored 12 consecutive points for a 42-12 advantage.

Van Zalinge drained a trey, but Lagasse closed out the quarter with five points for a 47-15 Ellicott lead.

Van Zalinge scored six points and Madrid five to help the Lady Tigers close to within the 55-29 final score.

Madrid led Del Norte with 14 points and Van Zalinge was next with 10.

Lagasse led all scorers with 19 points.

Del Norte (0-1) will host Buena Vista on Thursday. The first game begins at 4:30 p.m.
