ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School girls basketball team found itself in a deep hole when it hosted Ellicott at the Alamosa Basketball Challenge Friday at the AHS gym.

The Lady Mean Moose attempted a late comeback, however, it fell six points short as the Lady Thunderhawks won by a score of 47-41.

Clarissa Smith gave Ellicott the early lead with a layup, and Aileen Gutierrez made three free throws. Mary Masias put Alamosa on the board with a 3-point basket, but the Lady Thunderhawks pushed their lead to 11-3.

Miranda Geringer ended the run with a trey, and Miquela Abeyta  and Sydney Jackson both scored to bring the Lady Moose within 11-10. The Lady Thunderhawks increased the lead to 15-10, but Morgan Ortega drained a three in the final seconds to close the deficit to 15-13.

Ellicott came out red-hot for the second quarter as it scored the first 12 points for a 27-13 advantage. Alamosa rallied to close within a 29-23 deficit, but Micheyla Stewart made two free throws for a 31-23 Lady Thunderhawks lead at halftime.

Charley Higham made a jumper in the paint and Geringer made another 3-pointer to reduce the Ellicott lead to 31-28. But once again, the Lady Thunderhawks had another run and they had a 41-32 lead at the end of the period.

Ellicott took a 47-34 lead with 4:10 left in the game. But Emily Melgoza made back-to-back baskets and Higham split at the line. Abeyta scored again to bring Alamosa within 47-41. However, that would be as close as the Lady Mean Moose would come.

Melgoza led Alamosa with seven points, followed by Masias and Geringer both with six.

Stewart was Ellicott’s leading scorer with 15 points, and Gutierrez was next with 12.

Alamosa (0-1) will play Lamar today at 1 p.m. The Lady Thunder were scheduled to play Del Norte on Friday, however, they were unable to make the trip because of high winds in southeastern Colorado.

Del Norte will play Ellicott at 10 a.m.
