Lady Mean Moose dominate Lady Panthers 64-23

ALAMOSA – The 10th-ranked Alamosa High School girls basketball team had a tight game in the first half when it hosted Montezuma-Cortez Friday at the AHS gym. However, the Lady Mean Moose broke the game wide open in the second half as they went on to claim a 64-23 win.

Charley Higham gave Alamosa the early lead with a layup, but Savannah Haselroth put the Lady Panthers into the lead with a 3-point basket. Markylla Jones scored from the inside to extend the Cortez lead to 5-2.

Brooke Gonzales ended the run with a layup, and then Miranda Geringer hit a jump shot to put the Lady Mean Moose back into the lead. Gonzales split at the free throw line, but Kayce Tom hit a short jumper to tie the score at 7-7.

Morgan Ortega made one of two free throws, and Taybor Wiedeman made two free tosses for a 10-7 lead. Sariah Jackson’s jumper closed the margin to 10-9, however, Mary Masias’ layup gave Alamosa a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Gonzales opened the second quarter scoring with a layup, but Jones drove for a layup, and Haselroth scored a layup and added a free throw to deadlock the score at 14-14.

Gonzales scored four straight points, and Geringer made a 3-pointer to give the Lady Mean Moose a 21-14 advantage.

Both teams scored four points in the final 2:42 of the quarter and Alamosa led 25-18 at halftime.

The third quarter was all Alamosa as it outscored Cortez 17-0 in the period. Geringer and Higham both scored four points in the run.

The Lady Mean Moose continued the rally into the fourth quarter as they scored the first 13 points of the period to account for a 30-0 Alamosa rally.

The Lady Panthers managed five points in the entire second half with Alamosa outscoring them 39-5.

Gonzales led the Lady Mean Moose with 13 points, followed by Geringer with 11.

Haselroth led Montezuma-Cortez with 10 points.

Alamosa (13-4, 6-1) will host Pagosa Springs today. The varsity game tips off at 5:30 p.m.
