ALAMOSA – It was a tale of two halves on Saturday when the Alamosa High School girls soccer team hosted Florence at the AHS stadium.

The Lady Huskies got two early goals in the first half and the lead held until halftime. But the Lady Mean Moose scored twice in the second half as the teams battled to a 2-2 draw.

“We were a little disappointed because we beat Florence last season by a lot,” said Alamosa coach Kelly Wubben. “We had so many opportunities and actually I think we had a couple that went in but they didn’t call them in. But I’m proud of my girls for fighting back and coming back.”

Kaydence Martinez scored Florence’s first goal in the eighth minute and she scored again six minutes later. Victoria Finnigsmeyer was credited with the assist on both goals.

Alamosa, however, was the more aggressive team as it put 11 shots on goal, but they were all stopped by Florence goalkeeper Naomi McWilliams. The Lady Huskies had four shots on goal.

The Lady Mean Moose kept up the pressure in the second half and they finally got on the scoreboard in the 50th minute with Araceli Molina rebounding a Jayden Wubben attempt and putting it into the net.

Molina would score the tying goal with 1:46 left in the game. Leah Higareda was credited with the assist.

Alamosa had 23 shots on goal compared to only six for the Lady Huskies. Lady Moose goalkeeper Emmy Tibbitts had four saves.

Alamosa also had 18 corner kicks in the game. Florence had none.

Alamosa (8-5-2) is the 29th seed in the Class 3A State Tournament which will begin this week. The Lady Mean Moose will travel to fourth-ranked Delta for the first round on Thursday. Game time is at 4 p.m.

One other league team qualified for state as Bayfield will be the 32nd seed. The Lady Wolverines will play at top-ranked Colorado Academy.
