Larry Whitney

Manassa resident Larry Whitney passed from this life on August 14, 2021. He was born in Alamosa Colorado on March 28, 1936, to Frances H. and Laura D. Whitney of Sanford Colorado. He started working construction at an early age with his father and later began Whitney Construction. He worked in the construction industry for over 65 years. He completed multiple constructions projects throughout the valley including banks, schools, churches and private homes. His motto was “We do bout everything”.  He employed various individuals that became lifelong friends, including Uncle Buck Canty, cousin Kenny Jones, Ernest Coley, his son Tim Whitney, Kirk Jarvies and Max Fringer to name a few. Larry was known as the “guru” of the construction business and was frequently on the telephone responding to calls for advice as to how to begin or complete a project. He was very innovative and could always figure out how to make or fix something to make it work. He loved spending time with his family. He loved the great outdoors camping, hunting and fishing. He was an avid Broncos fan and spent many a Sunday watching football. Larry was a self-made man who lived his life to have no regrets. He was helpful to anyone who asked. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Larry is survived by the love of his life Pat (Richardson) Whitney; daughters Cindy Whitney (Jeff Robison) of Cortland, New York and Carol (Charles) Taulbee of Farmington, New Mexico; daughter-in-law Tana Whitney of Manassa, Colorado and son Don Whitney of Rio Rancho, New Mexico. He is also survived by grandchildren Ashley Whitney, Tyler Whitney, Jordan Whitney, Jared Marquis and Justin Marquis; 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson; sisters Phyllis Ann Stacey and Alice Coleen Hessler. Larry is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family. His favorite niece was Kyla Anderson and he really enjoyed her visits and “shooting the bull” with her. He was greatly loved and admired, had many friends and will be missed by all who knew him.

Larry was preceded in death by his son Timothy DeWayne Whitney, parents Frances and Laura Whitney and Jess and Mary Richardson; siblings Bob Whitney and Virginia Barkley.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 25, at the LDS Cultural Center in Manassa, 315 Main Street, from 6-8 pm.  A funeral service will be held the following morning Thursday, August 26, at 11 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Manassa with interment to follow at the Manassa cemetery.
