Letter to the Editor: Gomez family appreciates assistance after fire

To our family, friends, the San Luis Valley community and beyond, we don’t know where to begin. As many of you know, on February 3 our peaceful lives turned upside down recently after we lost our home to a fire. It has been a surreal time. We have to begin with a great big thanks to the first responders who came to our home on that cold early morning.  We thank you for your heroic efforts. Thankfully our family is safe, which is absolutely the most important part of this whole experience.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to everyone who helped us in these last five weeks. Never in a million years did we think we would be on the receiving end of so many generous donations of time, money and meals.  While we are devastated that the experience of a house fire will be nothing but memories, we are consoled by the fact that these incredible acts of kindness will also be a vivid memory during this frightening time of uncertainty.  The compassion and generosity that has been shown to us started while the fire was still burning and continues each day.

We certainly have a long road ahead, but it is so comforting to know that we are not alone. We are eternally grateful for everything our friends, family and business owners did for us. A special thank you to April Dominguez and Paula Espinoza who coordinated the Benefit Dinner on March 2nd - and to all the volunteers, those who donated food and for the many who came out to support us—we THANK YOU!

It may be a while before we get a chance to acknowledge friends, families, and first responders individually, but know that we have seen every text, listened to every voicemail, read each email and treasure each of the beautiful cards that have been sent. Thank you for the donations to the GoFundMe account, the phone calls, the prayers and the love that has been shown to my family. We are truly humbled by it all! We will never forget the incredible support you have all given us. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!
