Letter to the editor: Shriver supports SLV veterans

My name is Richard Nagley. I am a veteran (USAF ‘68-72) and a founding member of the Veterans Coalition of the San Luis Valley. We started the coalition in 2012 to help San Luis Valley veterans and their families, with all kinds of issues, from benefit needs, to medical needs, to educational opportunities and more resources, etc.

This letter is my recommendation to the citizens of Rio Grande County to re-elect Karla Shriver for a third term as our county commissioner. In addition to her leadership and contributions as commissioner and community service on many boards and committees, she has been a true friend of the veterans of the San Luis Valley. She worked on the Veterans Coalition steering committee, as the Rio Grande county representative, during our formation. Ms. Shriver has always worked with our local, state and federal legislators to support issues important to all veterans.

She has worked to secure a $450,000 plus grant to refurbish the chapel at Homelake for veterans and residents. This will be a lasting benefit to our community and to all who served in the armed forces. On a personal side, she obtained a much-needed grant from a private foundation to help support our growing coalition.

Please vote to re-elect Karla Shriver for County Commissioner in the June 26 primary election.

She’s a friend to veterans and the leader our community needs for the next four years.

Richard Nagley
