Letter to the Editor: Sign petition to keep JCPenney in Alamosa

Dear Valley folks,

Last week, Dave Reschke, manager of the JCPenney store in Alamosa, was notified that this store is slated to close—FOREVER—in July. What a shock for him and all the employees! Having seen Dave a couple days previous and talking business, I also was shocked.

The employees had weathered the awful change to a Final Take store, and they had worked their butts off to put the store back into the format we all preferred. (That Final Take was sure a mistake, I think we all agree).

This is a profitable store. I don’t know how much they make, or what the goals are or should be, but I do know that the corporate offices were not losing money on the Alamosa JCPenney store.

We have started a petition/show of support letter at the Green Spot. I don’t know that we can make a difference, but it seems like we have to try. Please stop by and sign, if you are so inclined. We will gather A LOT of signatures and then a master letter will be written and sent to everyone we can think of.

In my humble opinion, it’s not just the closing of the store, but how it will hurt downtown Alamosa. It will hurt.

If you have a group or organization, or church, or school, where you could pass around a tablet for signatures, please stop by and pick one up. Maybe together we can make a difference in our community. Thank you!
