Letter to the editor: Thanks to all who made Antonito Labor Day event a hit

Dear editor,

I would like to share with everyone Antonito’s Labor Day weekend’s diverse and, entertaining activities. The annual softball tournament kicked off the festivities with two diamonds to offer to the 11 teams who participated, 5 of which were coed teams. From what little I observed the ladies ran, threw, and could hit as well as any of their male teammates! In the coed division the Wild Bunch took 1st, and in the men’s, the team Middle’s Open won 1st place.

The Saturday morning pancake breakfast was a hit!!! The aroma of bacon and coffee was quite enticing.

The 10 a.m. parade saw 50 entries attempt to win prizes that amounted to $750.00 in the float category, and bicycle category. Float winners Conejos County Social Services, Green Genie, and Our Lady of Guadalupe Fiesta Queen, Arianna Espinoza-Cooper, respectively, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Mr. Jimmy Duran, along with help from family, and friends, hosted what may become an annual fixture in the town’s events!

The Antonito Car and Truck Show drew entries from all over the San Luis Valley, including New Mexico. Best in Show was Richard Garcia’s 1972 Chevelle, from Center, home of the Poor Boys Car Club. 1st place, Jaz Vigil of Monte Vista with his 72 Nova, 2nd Art Garcia also from Monte Vista  with his 65 Impala SS. People’s Choice, and 3rd went to Chris Garcia of Center, and Best Truck was awarded to Tommy Vigil of Monte Vista, congrats to all, and thanks for participating!

Music at the Dutch Mill, the Senior Citizen Center, and the Antonito Town Park was performed Saturday and Sunday, my thanks to all of you who helped put the sound and staging together, allowing the likes of Chris Collins, Cancioneros Del Valle, Bad Attitude, Crushed Rock, and the one and only Indian Nickel to entertain both Saturday and Sunday. The sidewalk chalk art contest was won by Heaven Gurule with her piece we all call “ Blue Eyes.”

As always our town administrator and his crew came through, preparing the various locations that were to be needed as venues or parking. Thank you all for the nods of approval and permission!!!

Finally the hour long fireworks display and the street dance, both went off without a hitch, no stray fires or incidents were reported.

Until next time be well everyone!

Wade George
