Letter to the editor: Vote no on added retail marijuana tax

The City of Alamosa is slated to make thousands of dollars from their existing sales tax on marijuana businesses. Retail cannabis shops already pay 20 percent additional tax to the State of Colorado and cannabis growers already pay 15 percent additional tax which is passed on to the shops as increased wholesale prices.

The end result of the City of Alamosa adding additional taxes will be higher prices at Alamosa’s dispensaries and will lead to their inability to compete effectively with the lower prices offered at shops in surrounding areas. If Alamosa shops weren’t burdened by having to charge higher prices, their increased business would more than make up for any revenue gained by this unnecessary added tax.  Marijuana is already the most heavily taxed commodity in Colorado. Give Alamosa’s cannabis shops the ability to compete effectively and truly contribute to the community.
