Local athletes continue to be in MaxPreps track rankings

ALAMOSA – Several high school track and field athletes continue to be ranked by MaxPreps in their respective classifications as of last Saturday.

The Top 18 athletes in each event in Classes 5A, 4A, 3A and 2A will qualify for the state tournament in May. In Class 1A, the Top 9 in sprints, hurdles and sprint relays, along with the Top 12 in distances, distance relays and field events will qualify for state.

Class 3A

Alamosa

The Alamosa Mean Moose have six male athletes in the rankings including two who are ranked in two events. Jayr Almeida is fourth in the 800-meter run in 2:01.82 and he is 16th in the 400-meter dash in 52.57. Isaac Higareda, is ninth in the 1,600 in 4:37.44 and 16th in the 3,200 in 10:15.71.

Other Mean Moose athletes who are ranked include Jaxon Morgan, who is fourth in the pole vault at 11-5, Brant Jackson, who is tied for ninth in the high jump at 6-0, Jesse Maestas, who is tied for 10th in the pole vault at 10-0, Chase Smith, who is 15th in the 300 hurdles in 43.03, and Santiago Trujillo, who is 15th in the 400 in 52.46.

Alamosa is also ranked in two boys relays. It is fifth in the 4x400 in 3:31.86, and sixth in the 4x800 in 8:38.56.

The Lady Mean Moose are led by Aani Hardesty, who is ranked in five events. She is fifth in the 100 in 12.87, fifth in the 300 hurdles in 47.91, eighth in the 400 in 1:00.28, 11th in the 200 in 27.38, and 13th in the 100 hurdles in 17.40.

Two other Alamosa girls are ranked in multiple events. Sarah DeLaCerda is eighth in the 1,600 in 5:18.86, 14th in the 800 in 2:25.51 and 15th in the 400 in 1:01.58. Lia Castillo is tied for eighth in the high jump at 5-0 and 10th in the 800 in 2:24.38, and Emily Melgoza is 11th in the shot put at 32-8 and 15th in the discus at 98-3.

Other ranked Lady Moose include Madeline Castillo, who is eighth in the 3,200 in 12:02.43, and Elizabeth McQuitty, who is 15th in the 3,200 in 12:20.40.

Alamosa is ranked in two girls relays. The Lady Moose are fifth in the 4x400 in 4:12.85, and seventh in the 4x800 in 10:21.72.

Class 2A

Centauri

The Centauri boys are led by Mason Claunch, who is ranked in all three sprints. He is tied for first in the 100 in 11:04, second in the 200 in 23.06, and second in the 400 in 50.97.

Two more Falcons are ranked in more than one event. Mason Sowards is seventh in the triple jump at 40-3, ninth in the 300 hurdles in 43.97, and 13th in the 400 in 53.14. Austin Stockebrand is tied for seventh in the high jump at 5-10, 13th in the 110 hurdles in 17.77, and 13th in the 300 hurdles in 44.88.

Also ranked for the Centauri boys are Troy Sowards, who is fifth in the high jump at 5-11, Deven Brady, who is 10th in the 100 in 11.58, and Ben Tailleur, who is tied for 17th in the high jump at 5-8.

The Falcons are ranked in all four boys relays including having the best time in the 4x100 in 44.20 and in the 4x200 in 1:31.49. They are also 14th in the 4x800 in 9:18.84, and 15th in the 4x400 in 3:49.37.

Two Lady Falcons are in the individual rankings. McKenna Guymon is eighth in the 300 hurdles in 51.98, and Caitlin Creel is 16th in the shot put at 32-1 ½.

Centauri is ranked in three girls relays. It is fourth in the 4x800 in 11:03.61, 14th in the 4x400 in 4:36.43, and 17th in the 4x200 in 1:57.27.

Center

Center has only one ranked athlete in Alexis Varela. She is seventh in the 100 in 13.34, and 18th in the 200 in 28.32.

No athletes from the Vikings’ boys team are ranked.

Del Norte

Del Norte has only three ranked athletes. For the boys, Riley Orr is sixth in the pole vault at 11-7, and Michael Laymon is tied for 17th in the high jump at 5-8.

For the Lady Tigers, Shelby Van Zalinge is tied for 14th in the pole vault at 7-8.

Monte Vista

The Monte Vista Pirates have two ranked individuals. Alex Felix is 15th in the discus at 119-5, and Damian Lopez is 16th in the 100 in 11.67.

The Pirates are 16th in the 4x100 boys relay in 46.68.

No Lady Pirates are currently ranked.

Sargent

Sargent also has one ranked individual in Bailey Asbell, who is ranked in three events. She is sixth in the 300 hurdles in 51.15, seventh in the 100 hurdles in 17.59, and 17th in the long jump at 15-0 ½.

None of the Farmer boys track athletes are ranked.

Class 1A

Antonito

Antonito has two ranked athletes. Jasiah Jiron is tied for 10th in the boys high jump at 5-6, and Zanita Garcia is 12th in the girls 3,200 in 18:29.46.

Creede

Creede has two ranked athletes. Ryder Whitehorn is 10th in the boys shot put at 37-9, and Gavin Jerebek is 11th in the same event at 37-7.

No Miner girls are in the rankings.

Moffat

Moffat also has two ranked male athletes. Kodiak Reigel is sixth in the 300 hurdles in 46.59, and Ziah Pesqueria is tied for 10th in the high jump at 5-6.

None of the Lady Cowboys are ranked.

Sanford

Sanford has six boys in the rankings. Leading the Indians are Gauge Lewis, who has the best time in the 100 in 11.60. Other ranked Indians include Ren Canty, who is sixth in the 1,600 in 5:01.19 and seventh in the 3,200 in 11:04.52, Lincoln Reynolds, who is eighth in the 400 in 54.80, Kelton Gartrell, who is ninth in the 100 at 11.98, and McCray Larsen and Timothy Polley, who are both tied for 10th in the high jump at 5-6.

The Indians are ranked in all four boys relays including having the best time on the 4x100 in 46.17. They are also ninth in the 4x200 in 1:39.64, ninth in the 4x400 in 4:01.11, and ninth in the 4x800 in 9:49.70.

Three Lady Indians are in the individual rankings. Erica Miller is seventh in the 400 in 1:05.81, Haley Faucette is ninth in the triple jump at 31-8 ½, and Holly McDaniel is ninth in the 300 hurdles in 56.50.

Sanford is ranked in four girls relays. It is third in the 4x400 in 4:31.96, fifth in the 800 sprint medley in 2:01.46, eighth in the 4x100 in 55.64, and ninth in the 4x200 in 2:00.55.

Sangre de Cristo

Sangre de Cristo has two ranked athletes in twin siblings William and Presley Wilson. William is 10th in the boys 1,600 in 5:17.58, and Presley in 10th in the girls discus at 88-8.

The Thunderbirds are ranked in two relays. The boys 4x800 team in 11th in 10:04.49, and the girls 4x800 is seventh in 13:16.47.

Sierra Grande

No Sierra Grande athletes are ranked in either boys or girls track.

Correction

In Wednesday’s edition of the Valley Courier, it was incorrectly reported that Samantha DeVries-Voeglein took fourth place in the discus at the Del Norte Tiger Invitational. The correct athlete was actually Presley Wilson of Sangre de Cristo. DeVries-Voeglein is on the Cotopaxi track team.

This week

The local teams will be in several meets across the southern part of the state this weekend.

Today, Antonito, Centauri, Center and Del Norte will be at the Rye Invitational. On Saturday, Creede and Sargent will be at the Ron Keller Invitational in Durango. Del Norte, Monte Vista, Sanford and Sierra Grande will be at the La Junta Tiger Relays on Tuesday.
