Local products make unique gifts

STATEWIDE – Memories of juicy peaches and crisp sweet corn are fading as the summer produce season has past, but the holidays are another great time to buy local. Many Colorado farmers are extending their growing seasons, and farmers’ markets are moving indoors for the fall and winter.  The Colorado Department of Agriculture’s Winter Farmers’ Market List provides information about markets statewide. Additional online resources include the “Season’s Eatings” Colorado Food and Agriculture Gift Guide and Colorado Christmas Tree List, which help connect holiday shoppers with local producers.

“People may automatically think fresh fruits and veggies when buying local, but Colorado has a variety of wonderful products available year-round,” said Wendy White, marketing specialist for the Colorado Department of Agriculture. “Whether you are looking for a unique gift or need a special ingredient for your holiday menu, look for the Colorado Proud label when shopping.”

The Winter Farmers’ Market List includes markets offering special holiday events and winter hours. The “Season’s Eatings” Colorado Food & Agriculture Gift Guide features locally-made salsas, jams, culinary seasonings, alpaca socks, sweets and more. The gift guide highlights the faces behind local food and product manufacturers, who want you to buy local this holiday season. The Christmas Tree List identifies locations where individuals can find the perfect tree for their families including u-cut operations and information on cutting trees in national forests.
