Margie Lopez-Jiron

Margie Lopez-Jiron

Our dear mom and grandma, Margie Lopez-Jiron, sadly passed away on November 8 at the age of 83 after a valiant battle against cancer.  She was born March 20, 1939, in San Antonio, Colorado, to Dionicio and Estella Lopez.  She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, friend, teacher, and most of all, the matriarch of our family – some even called her an icon.  She was always there when we needed her.  Margie married her loving husband of 53 years, Edmund Jiron in 1962. Margie was a well-loved and known member of the communities of Antonito and Center, Colorado where she taught.  She was a lifelong educator – having taught hundreds of students in both communities over her 25-year career. During her teaching career she was selected as teacher of the year on two different occasions.  Upon her retirement, Margie continued to stay busy as ever.  She founded the Los Guadalupanitos children’s dance group which she dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe. This dance group performed at Church Fiestas, Nursing Homes, school events, The Sunshine Festival, Mother’s Day celebrations and Cultural events throughout the San Luis Valley.  Margie was a member of various community and religious councils and boards in the Antonito Community. One of her greatest joys was being a member of the Conejos Spanish Choir for 44 years.

She was predeceased by her son, Glenn Jiron, husband, Edmund Jiron, her parents Dionicio Lopez and Estella Lopez, sister Edna Letourneau, and numerous friends and pets.  She is survived by her children Darlene (David) Valdez of Alamosa, son and daughter Paul and Denise Jiron of Antonito, daughter Noel (Orlando) Ramos of Alamosa. Margie was also blessed with the gifts of grandchildren — Paul “PJ” Jiron (Patty Moncada), Marcelino Jiron, Joaquin Jiron, Augustine Ramos, Adrianna Valdez, Michael Valdez, and Ezmund Ramos.  She had dozens of nieces and nephews, too many to count, whom she treated like her own children.  She is also survived by her brother Alex Lopez (Marjorie Yohn), brother-in-law Roger Leutorneau and many cousins, friends, and beloved in-laws on the Jiron side.  She leaves behind many cherished friends and extended family members.

A Vigil service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, November 11, 2022, at 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos.  A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, at 1 p.m. also at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  Interment will follow at the Los Cerritos Cemetery.  Viewing and visitation will be held Friday November 11th from noon to 4 p.m. at the Romero Funeral Chapel in Antonito who is in care of the arrangements.
