Maria Elvira Valdez

Maria Elvira Valdez, 80, passed away on June 17, 2024, at St. Francis Medical Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., surrounded by her loving husband, children and grandchildren. She was born in the picturesque town of San Miguel, N.M., on May 5, 1944, to Leopoldo Marquez and Luisa Duran.

Maria led a life filled with cherished moments and beautiful memories with her husband of 58 years Pete. She had a special fondness for decorating during the festive seasons of Christmas and Halloween, often adorning her home with Native American decorations that reflected her heritage and love for culture.

Her personality was a blend of cherished traits - from reminiscing about her upbringing in San Miguel to her deep affection for all animals, especially chihuahuas. Maria was known for her caring nature, genuine concern for others, resilience in the face of challenges, as well as being a great listener with a humble demeanor.

Throughout her life, Maria found joy in various hobbies and interests which included gardening, fishing, listening to country music, dancing to the rhythm of life, cooking delicious meals, watching Novellas on television, and trying her luck at bingo.

In the hearts of those who knew her well, Maria will always be remembered as a devoted wife to Pete B. Valdez, a loving mother to Pearl (Eric) Gutierrez, Stella Michelle (Kimberly) Valdez and Pete (Stacy) Valdez, a proud grandmother to Raul (Beki) Ramos, Rocio (Jesse) Varner, Devon Valdez, Jacob Gutierrez, Bryanna Valdez and Francisco Valdez and a cherished sister to Rosana P. Monge. Maria shared a special bond with her chihuahua Paloma who brought her comfort and companionship.

Maria was preceded in death by her parents Leopoldo and Louisa Marquez, her brothers Jose I. Marquez and Ubaldo P. Marquez as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.

As we bid farewell to Maria may we hold onto the precious memories she has left us with - memories that reflect her spicy yet caring spirit, pure heart, genuine love for life and others around her.
