ALAMOSA — Alamosa has added another site to its registry of historic places.

The Alamosa city council approved a resolution last week to add 504 State Avenue, long-time home to Martinez Shoe Repair, to the Alamosa Registry of Historic Places.

Historic Preservation Advisory Committee members and Alamosa Mayor Ty Coleman presented the official plaque that will be placed at the site to building owner Joseph Martinez on Thursday.

Historic Preservation Advisory Committee Chairman Ralph Symbleme said this site has had only two proprietors over the years, the Leon sisters who operated a high-end ladies fashion store there for 50 years, and Martinez. He said when the Leon sisters opened their shop, there were only two cars in the city. The sisters did not put price tags on the items in their shop and only served customers they knew.

The shoe repair shop has been in business for decades and offers a unique service to Alamosa and the surrounding area.

The historic site still retains its original design features. It is next to the American National Bank Building, which is listed in the National Register and shares architectural features with that building.

The current storefront appears to date to the 1950’s.

Symbleme said this has been a banner year for the local advisory committee with five sites designated historic in Alamosa.
