Max Atencio, 95

Del Norte resident Max Atencio, 95, passed away January 8, 2018 at the Rio Grande Hospital with his loving family by his side. Max was born on August 28, 1922 in Cotton Creek, Colorado, the son of Gavino Atencio and Rufinita Archuleta Atencio. Max served and was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II. He was united in marriage to Betty Archuleta on January 9, 1950 in Del Norte, Colorado. Max was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend who enjoyed gardening, choir, fishing, rabbit hunting, telling stories and spending time with his family and friends.  He was also a life member of the V.F.W and will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife Betty Atencio of Del Norte, CO; daughter Cristabel Muncy (Randy Spencer) of Westminster, CO; sons Del (Mary) Atencio of Lakewood, CO; Max (Sharon) Atencio of Del Norte, CO; Bob (Shirley) Atencio of Lakewood, CO; Joe Atencio of Thornton, CO; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren;sisters Priscilla (Gene) Sanders, Ruth Sanchez both of Denver, CO; Frances Boatright of Pensacola, FL. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Max was preceded in death by his parents Gavino and Rufinita Atencio, one sister Cecilia Torres, grandson Michael Muncy, four brothers John Atencio, Prese Atencio, Rudy Atencio and Richard Atencio.

A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018  at 7:00 PM at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church in Del Norte. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 10:00 AM also at Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Del Norte Cemetery with full military honors. The care of arrangements have been entrusted to Romero Funeral Home of Monte Vista.
