Mean Moose, Falcons split doubleheader

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School baseball team was looking stay in contention for the Intermountain League championship when. It hosted a doubleheader with Centauri Saturday at Ortega Middle School.

The Mean Moose, however, were knocked out of contention as they split with the Falcons. Alamosa won the opener 10-0, but Centauri came back to win the nightcap 17-15 in extra innings.

Game 1

The Mean Moose struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning. Carlos Garcia drew a walk and he advanced to third as Nelson Arambula reached on an error. Garcia scored on Gus West’s groundout.

After a scoreless second and third innings, Alamosa scored six runs in the fourth. Kiko Ruybal drew a leadoff walk, followed by Xavier Lujan getting hit by a pitch. Brennan Maez walked to load the bases, and Tony  Griego singled home Ruybal and Evan Anderson who was courtesy running for Lujan.

Garcia singled to plate Maez and Griego for a 5-0 lead. Arambula’s single brought Garcia home.

Arambula was caught stealing, but Jayden Mizokami continued the winning with a single. Jonah Pittman also singled, and Ruybal’s single drove in Mizokami to extend the lead to 7-0.

The Mean Moose wrapped up the game with a three-run fifth. Garcia tripled and A.J. Baker, who was courtesy-running for Garcia, scored on a wild pitch. Arambula and West hit back-to-back doubles with Arambula scoring, and Pittman singled home West to end the game on the 10-run rule.

Lujan went the distance on the mound for the Mean Moose and he picked up the win. He allowed no runs and only two hits while striking out three, walking one and hitting one batter.

Dylan Gallardo started for the Falcons and was dealt the loss. He gave up six runs and six hits and he had two strikeouts, five walks and one hit batter. Diego Hernandez went to the mound in the fourth and surrendered four runs and eight hits and he had one strikeout, no walks and one hit batter.

Alamosa was led offensively by Garcia who went 3-3 including a triple and two RBIs, Arambula who went 3-4 with a double and one RBI, and Pittman who went 3-4 with one RBI.

For Centauri, Leland Chacon went 1-1 with a double, and Jace Haslett went 1-2.

Game 2

The Mean Moose picked up from where they left off by scoring four runs in the first. Griego received a leadoff walk and Garcia also drew a base on balls.Arambula singled to drive in Griego, and West walked to load the bases. Pittman singled to plate Garcia and Arambula, and West scored as Alamosa executed the double steal.

Centauri got back into the game with three runs in the fourth. Hernandez started with an infield single and Spencer Smith walked. Chacon singled home Hernandez, and Parker Buhr doubled to drive home Smith and Chacon.

Alamosa answered with three runs in its half of the inning. Maez led off by reaching on an error and he stole second and third. He scored on an error.

Griego walked and stole second, and Garcia drove home Griego.

Garcia was caught stealing, but West continued the inning with a double. Mizokami also doubled to plate West for a 7-4 lead.

The Falcons took the lead with seven runs in the sixth. Smith drew a leadoff walk and scored on Chacon’s double. Caden Allen singled to put runners at the corners, and Buhr’s single drove home Chacon. Haslett also singled, and Kamryn Garcia tied the score as he doubled home Buhr and Haslett.

Dylan Gallardo reached on an error and Garcia scored on the play. Another error allowed Dylan Gallardo to score for a 10-7 lead.

The Mean Moose responded with three runs in their half of the frame. Griego led off with a single and he scored on Garcia’s triple Garcia came home on Arambula’s groundout. West kept the inning alive with a triple and Pittman’s single brought West home.

The Falcons scored four times in the seventh. Buhr led off with a walk and Deven Brady also received a free pass. Haslett soingled home both runners, and Garcia reached on an error to allow Haslett to score. Another error brought Garcia home for a 14-10 advantage.

Alamosa responded with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Lujan and Maez both walked to begin the frame, and Lujan scored on a wild pitch. Garcia singled home Maez, and after Arambula walked, West and Mizokami both had RBI singles and the game went to extra innings.

Centauri scored three times in the top of the eighth. Brady walked and scored on Haslett’s double. Dylan Gallardo drew a walk and Hernandez brought home both Haslett and Dylan Gallardo.

Alamosa attempted another rally in the bottom of the eighth. Ryan Higareda drew a leadoff walk, and Maez also walked and Griego singled to load the bases. Higareda scored on Garcia’s sacrifice fly, but Maez and Griego were left stranded as the game ended.

Ruybal started on the mound for the Mean Moose. He allowed three runs and four hits with six strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter. West relieved Ruybal in the fifth and gave up seven runs and five hits and he struck out three, walked one and hit one. Pittman finished the game and took the loss. He surrendered seven runs and two hits with one strikeout and five walks.

Drake Gallardo started for Centauri and allowed seven runs and seven hits and he struck out two, walked five and hit one batter. Brady took the mound in the fifth and allowed three runs and four hits with one strikeout, no walks and one hit batter. Hernandez then went to pitch in the seventh and surrendered three runs and one hit and he walked two. Haslett pitched to two batters and allowed one run, one hit and one walk. Dylan Gallardo finished the game and took the win. He gave up one run and two hits with two walks.

The Mean Moose collected 15 hits and were led by West who went 4-4 with a double, a triple and one RBI, Garcia who went 3-5 with a triple and three RBIs, Griego who went 2-3, Mizokami who went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs, and Pittman who went 2-5 with three RBIs.

The Falcons had 11 hits and were led by Haslett who went 3-6 with two doubles and three RBIs, Buhr who went 2-3 with three RBIs, and Chacon who went 2-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.

What’s next

Alamosa (5-14, 3-3) will host Sanford on Friday at 11 a.m. before traveling to Pagosa Springs to wrap up league play with a doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.

Centauri (7-12) will travel to Montezuma-Cortez on Saturday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
