Mean Moose pick up two more wins

ALAMOSA – The sixth-ranked Alamosa High School boys basketball team played two games over the past three days and it won both of them.

Alamosa 48, Pagosa Springs 34

It was a battle of Top 10 team Saturday at the AHS gym as the Mean Moose hosted seventh-ranked Pagosa springs. Alamosa led from start to finish in a 48-34 victory over the Pirates.

Brant Jackson put the Mean Moose on the board first with a layup, and Kade Jones also scored from the inside. Jayr Almeida then made a 3-point basket and Alamosa led 7-0.

Blake Laner put the Pirates on the board, and Kayson Shahan drove for a layup to cut the deficit to 7-4. Jackson and Kade Jones closed out the period with layups and the Mean Moose led 11-4.

Laner began the second quarter by making one of two from the free throw line, and Chase Harper scored to close the lead to 11-7. But Kasey Jones drove for a layup and added a free throw, and Michael Motz also scored in the paint for a 16-7 advantage.

Harper scored again, but so did Motz. Seth Aucoin then made a trey to bring Pagosa Springs within 18-12 at halftime.

Kade Jones began the third quarter with a layup, but Colt Lewis and Gunner Dozier both made treys to reduce the Alamosa lead to 20-18. Jackson’s layup gave the Mean Moose a little more breathing room, but Laner also made a layup.

Luke Christensen then sparked an 11-0 Mean Moose run to increase the lead to 33-20. Christensen scored four points in the run, Almeida three, and Kasey Jones and Jackson both had two.

Seth Aucoin made another 3-pointer to end the run, and Aaron Aucoin split at the line. Almeida then drove for a layup just a time expired and Alamosa led 35-24 at the end of the third.

Kasey Jones hit a three for the first points of the fourth quarter, followed by a dunk by Jackson. Almeida also scored a layup and the Mean Moose had a 42-24 advantage.

Aaron Aucoin knocked down a jumper, but Parker Gilmore answered with a layup. Aaron Aucoin and Dozier both drained treys to reduce the Alamosa lead to 44-32.

Jackson scored four more points in the final minute to wrap up the scoring.

Jackson was Alamosa’s leading scorer with 14 points, and Almeida had 10.

Dozier led Pagosa with eight points.

Alamosa 54, Taos (N.M.) 46

Alamosa defeated Taos (N.M.) 54-46 Monday.

Almeida gave the Mean Moose the early lead with a layup five seconds into the game. Isaiah Apodaca scored four points, and Yovani Varela two as the Tigers took a 6-2 lead.

Almeida drained a 3-pointer, but Xavier Duke scored to again give Taos a three-point lead. Gilmore drove for a layup, and Kasey Jones made two free throws to put Alamosa back into the lead. Gilmore then made a three to give the Mean Moose a 12-8 advantage at the end of the first quarter.

Noah Washington and Daemon Ely both scored to tie the score at 12-12, but Almeida’s layup put Alamosa back into the lead. Duke and Ely both scored for a 16-14 Tigers lead.

Christensen made a trey to again give the Mean Moose the lead, but Lionel Salazar scored a layup and added a free throw. R.J. Meis tied the score, but Salazar and Washington both scored to give Taos a 23-19 lead at halftime.

Kade Jones opened the second half scoring, and Almeida followed with another 3-pointer to put Alamosa back in front at 24-23. Ely made a three of his own, and Varela also hit a trey, and Ely scored in the paint for a 31-25 lead.

Gilmore made a layup, and Jace Quintana made a three to cut the deficit to 31-30. Ely scored again, but Gilmore made a long three at the buzzer to tie the score at 33-33 after the third quarter.

Duke’s layup again put Taos into the lead, but Christensen drained a 3-pointer. Duke scored again, however, Christensen made three free throws for a 39-37 Mean Moose lead.

Christensen made two more free throws, but Washington buried a three to bring the Tigers within 41-40. Kade Jones then made a pair from the line and later added a layup and Alamosa led 45-40.

Mateo Chavez made a three to bring Taos within 45-43. But Christensen made a layup, and the Jones boys both made two free throws to give Alamosa a 51-43 advantage.

Washington made another three, but Christensen would score three more points to close out the scoring.

Christensen led Alamosa with 16 points, followed by Gilmore with 10.

Ely was Taos’ leading scorer with 11 points, and Washington was next with 10.

What’s next

Alamosa (17-1, 8-0 Intermountain) will host Centauri, the fourth-ranked team in Class 3A, on Friday beginning at 7 p.m. The Mean Moose will host Montrose Saturday at 3 p.m.
