Mean Moose place second at Gary Ramstetter Classic

Alamosa High School’s Dempsey Gibbs turns Pueblo West’s Emilio Trevizo on his back at the Gary Ramstetter Classic Saturday at the AHS gym. Gibbs went 5-0 on the day as the Mean Moose finished second in the tournament.

ALAMOSA – The eighth-ranked Alamosa High School boys wrestling team hosted the annual Gary Ramstetter Classic Saturday at the AHS gym. It was a dual meet tournament and the Mean Moose won four of its five meets to finish in second place.

“We did a good job,” said Alamosa coach Rusty Johnson. “We lost a close dual to Cedaredge, but overall I’m happy with what we did. We had a couple of guys out. We wound up in second place. It was good tournament and I’m proud of the who wrestled. We did a good job.”

Cedaredge 46, Alamosa 29

The Mean Moose opened the tournament against Cedaredge, the second-ranked team in Class 2A.

Alamosa got a pair of decision wins from Dempsey Gibbs (113) and Dario Valdez (120) to take an early 6-4 lead. After a Bruins’ win by fall, Alamosa regained the lead as Trevor Maestas pinned Lucas Hoerr in 3:07 at 132 pounds.

Cedaredge got another win by fall, but Kyler Liddell won the 145-pound match with a 15-0 technical fall. Dante Gonzales (152) then pinned Robert Smith in 1:04, and Jaedon Quintana took a forfeit win at 160 for a 29-16 advantage.

Cedaredge, however, won the rest of the individual matches for the 46-29 victory.

Alamosa 51, Rocky Ford 24

The Mean Moose then took on Rocky Ford, the seventh-ranked team in Class 2A.

Gibbs pinned Mateo Martinez in 3:10 to open the match. The Meloneers took a forfeit win at 120, however, Sage Rockcastle pinned Benny Carlos Gonzales in 3:25 to extend Alamosa’s lead to 12-3.

Rocky Ford got a win by fall at 132, but Donovan Valdez, Liddell and Gonzales all received forfeit wins to give the Mean Moose a 30-9 advantage.

The Meloneers won the next two matches to pull within 30-18. Mike Trujillo (182), Logan Garcia (195) and Erick Celis (220) all won by forfeit for a 48-18 lead.

Rocky Ford took a forfeit win at 285, but Dyson Woodward wrapped up the dual with a 1-0 decision over Dominic Gauna at 106 pounds.

Alamosa 39, Palmer Ridge 35

Dario Valdez began this dual meet with a 14-4 major decision over Tyson Stahlecker. The Bears got a technical fall win in the next match, but Maestas won by forfeit, Liddell pinned Chad Farmer in 20 seconds, and Gonzales scored a 9-6 decision over Logan Webb for a 22-5 lead.

Palmer Ridge won the next three matches by either fall or forfeit to regain the lead at 23-22. Garcia pinned William McCoy in 35 seconds to put the Mean Moose back on top, but the Bears took the next two matches to take a 35-28 lead.

Alamosa won the next two matches to record the win. Woodward pinned William Betts in 2:25, and Gibbs won by a 17-0 technical fall over Blaine Mischlich.

Alamosa 63, John Mall 12

The Mean Moose jumped out to a 12-0 lead as Rockcastle won by forfeit and Maestas pinned Giovanni Aldretti in 57 seconds. The Panthers won the 138-pound match, but Alamosa got forfeit wins by Liddell and Quintana, and Gonzales won by a 4-3 decision over Diego Sanchez to give the Moose a 27-6 advantage.

John Mall won at 182, but Alamosa won the final six matches. Trujillo, Celis and Woodward all won by forfeit, Garcia pinned Tyler Martin in 1:18, Gibbs pinned Aiden Trujillo in 38 seconds, and Dario Valdez pinned Damien Loreto in 1:34.

Alamosa 39, Pueblo West 34

Alamosa wrapped up the tournament with a 39-34 win over Pueblo West.

Maestas pinned Caleb Duran in 3:10, and Donovan Valdez won by an 11-1 major decision over Camden Simpson to give the Mean Moose a 10-0 lead. The Cyclones then won the next five matches for a 31-10 advantage.

Alamosa responded by winning the next five matches. Garcia, Celis, and Dario Valdez were all winners by forfeit. Woodward won by a 17-2 technical fall over Ben Kauffman, and Gibbs pinned Emilio Trevizo in 22 seconds.

Pueblo West won the final match to pull within 39-34.

Summary

Only one Alamosa wrestler went undefeated in the tournament as Gibbs went 5-0. Woodward, Dario Valdez, Maestas, Liddell, Gonzales and Garcia all went 4-1. Rockcastle, Donovan Valdez and Celis were all 3-2.

“My little guys were really good,” Johnson said. “I have some good little guys, but everybody does. But everybody needs to get a little bit better and get this stretch run going for the state tournament.”

Cedaredge won the tournament, followed by Alamosa. Palmer Ridge was third, Pueblo West was fourth, Rocky Ford was fifth and John Mall was sixth.

Ramstetter honored at tournament

Former Alamosa coach Gary Ramstetter was honored just before the final dual meets of the tournament.

Ramstetter led the Mean Moose to 12 team state titles. Six times Alamosa placed second and it was third seven times.

He also coached 57 individual state champions and 207 individual state placers in 42 years of coaching.

What’s next

Alamosa will be at home for a three-way double-dual meet today against Florence and Gunnison. The first match is at 4:30 p.m.

“We have a tri-meet with Florence and Gunnison on Tuesday night,” Johnson said. “Then we’ll go to Florence Tournament on Friday and Saturday.”
