Mean Moose qualify eight wrestlers for state tournament

ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School wrestling team finished in second place in the Class 3A Region 1 Tournament this past weekend at Western Colorado University in Gunnison. The Mean Moose also qualified eight of their competitors for this week’s Class 3A State Tournament.

Two of the Moose qualifiers were individual regional champions. Dyson Woodward won the 106-pound title by pinning Delta’s Dawson Druzdik in 2:45, and Dempsey Gibbs scored a 12-4 major decision over Gunnison’s Brock Fry to win at 113 pounds.

Alamosa had three more finalists that finished second in their weight divisions. Trevor Maestas was second at 132 after losing by a 6-2 decision against Bayfield’s James Mars. Kyler Liddell was second at 145 after losing by a 4-0 decision to Gunnison’s Miles Harris, and Logan Garcia was second at 195 after being pinned by Pagosa Springs’ Wil Aucion.

The remaining Mean Moose qualifiers were third in their weight classes. The list includes Dario Valdez (120), Sage Rockcastle (126) and Dante Gonzales (152).

Donovan Valdez (138), Jaedon Quintana (160), Dominic Martinez (170), Mikey Trujillo (182), and Erik Celis (220) all participated at the region tournament but did not qualify.

The Mean Moose scored 203 points and placed only behind Moffat county with 237 ½. Alamosa finished one point ahead of third place Gunnison.

The State Tournament begins Thursday and ends Saturday at Ball Arena in Denver.
