ALAMOSA – The eighth-ranked Alamosa High School wrestling team took two dual meet wins on Tuesday, but neither came easy as the Mean Moose defeated unranked Florence 48-36 and ninth-ranked Gunnison 47-33.

“They weren’t easy and we didn’t look really well,” said AHS coach Rusty Johnson. “I think we’re having a little bit of a lag from the tournament. Wrestling on Tuesday night doesn’t happen often because we have to make weight right after a big tournament. It’s harder for guys to make weight. We’ll look at the tape and look at the mistakes we made and we’ll get better.”

Alamosa 48, Florence 36

All 14 matches in this dual meet were all decided by fall. The first seven, the fall occurred in the first period.

Braiden Madril opened the match by pinning Adam Orton in 30 seconds at 106 pounds. Dempsey Gibbs then won the 113-pound match in 1:03 over Blake Larson, and Dario Valdez pinned Rian Ortiz in 47 seconds at 120 to give the Mean Moose an 18-0 lead.

The Huskies won the match at 126 pounds as Erik Danner pinned Jace Morgan in 1:15. Alamosa’s Trevor Maestas pinned Eyan Peek in 1:07 at 132, but Florence’s Brandon Boehm pinned Donovan Valdez in 30 seconds at 138 to cut the Moose lead to 24-12.

Kyler Liddell gave Alamosa a 30-12 lead by pinning Joseph Boyer in 1:37 at 145 pounds.

The 152-pound match was the first of the dual to go past the first period with Florence’s Jacob Kennedy winning by fall over Dante Gonzales in 5:25.

Xavier Martinez brought Florence within 30-24 by pinning Jaedon Quintana in 22 seconds.

Dominc Martinez helped the Mean Moose widen the lead to 36-24 as he pinned Dominic Livingstone in 21 seconds. Benjie Tomas then pinned James Bell in 4:40 to extend the Alamosa lead to 42-24.

Florence won the next two matches as Ryan Liddell pinned Mikey Trujillo in 27 seconds at 195, and Gunner Busetti pinned Erik Celis in 3:04 at 220 to close the margin to 42-36.

But Logan Garcia wrapped up the win for the Mean Moose as he pinned Weston Sweigart in 2:57.

Alamosa 47, Gunnison 33

The Cowboys took the early lead as Daymion Funk pinned Madril in 2:41 at 106. Gibbs earned Alamosa’s first win of the meet as he scored a 15-0 technical fall over Brock Fry at 113.

Gunnison’s Devin Gomez pinned Dario Valdez in 2:24 at 120, but Morgan took a forfeit win at 126 to pull Alamosa within 12-11.

Royce Uhrig helped the Cowboys widen their lead in the 132-pound match as he pinned Maestas just as the second period expired. But Donovan Valdez pinned Rylin Gallegos in 22 seconds to bring the Mean Moose within 18-17.

The 145-pound match was the first for Alamosa to go the distance, however, Liddell lost by a 2-1 decision to Miles Harris. The first period was scoreless, but Harris scored a two-point near fall in the second period. Liddell scored a point in the third as Harris was called for multiple stalling violations.

The Mean Moose then won the next three matches by forfeit with Gonzales (152), Quintana (160) and Martinez (170) all gaining the victories.

Gunnison won the next two matches as Jose Fernandez pinned Trujillo in 3:36 at 182, and Preston Gomez pinned Tomas at the end of the second period at 195.

The Mean Moose took the final two matches by forfeit as Garcia won at 220 and Celis won at 285.

What’s next

Alamosa will travel to Florence this weekend for the Mel Smith Invitational.

“It’s mostly 3A schools and it’s like a mini 3A state tournament,” Johnson said. “So we’ll know exactly where we’re sitting at the end of that tournament.”

The tournament will begin on Friday and end on Saturday.
