SAN LUIS VALLEY — Memorial Day ceremonies are being held at various locations across the San Luis Valley, including Alamosa, Monte Vista and Creede.

ALAMOSA

The American Legion will be hosting Memorial Day Ceremonies at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 29, beginning at the American Legion plot in the Alamosa Cemetery. The ceremonies will then move to the VFW plot, followed by a visit to Spanish Cemetery on Coop Road.

The American Legion needs the public’s help to honor Veterans. The Legion will begin placing flags on all Veteran graves at 10 a.m. on Sunday, May 28. The public is invited to assist in this effort to ensure all Veterans receive the recognition they deserve. If you have a family member, or friend, who is a Veteran, and is not buried in the Veteran sections of the cemetery, it is imperative these graves be located since the headstones may or may not indicate military affiliation.

For more information you can call Jack Rudder, American Legion Adjutant, at 719-588-9838, or Frankie Romero, American Legion Vice Commander, at 719-580-4322.

MONTE VISTA

On Memorial Day, May 29, the Colorado Veteran’s Community Living Center at Homelake will be holding a public ceremony at 10 a.m. at the cemetery. Everyone is invited to attend.

The center has not had a public ceremony for the past couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Keynote Speaker will be Eugene Farish. The ceremony will include Honor and Color guards, a presentation of wreaths, and tolling of the USS General Patrick Bell.

There will be a flyover by the 140th Wing of the Colorado Air National Guard. The Homelake History Center and Museum will be open after the service and will be open until 12:30 p.m.

According to the Homelake Veteran’s History Museum page, the Colorado Veteran’s Community Living Center is the first and most historic Veteran’s Center in all of Colorado. More than 4,000 veterans have lived at the facility starting with veteran’s that were from the Civil War and prevailing to current veterans.

The Homelake Veteran’s History Museum was established and brought to the Valley by the Homelake Historic Preservation and Restoration Foundation and is run entirely by volunteers. The museum is host to collectables from veterans who lived at the home, and veterans that were also from the area.
