Monte Vista drops home game to Pagosa Springs, falls to 2-1

Jacob Chavez finds some open field. Chavez was Monte Vista's primary means of ball movement and got their lone touchdown of the night

MONTE VISTA— The visiting Pagosa Springs Pirates (1-2) outpaced Monte Vista (2-1) on Friday night to a 26-7 victory.

Monte Vista entered this game carrying a two-win streak with their last coming at the hands of Ellicot 29-14. Pagosa had a chip on their shoulder as they were still looking for their first win of the season and still had a 36-17 defeat to Centauri fresh on their minds.
As the buzzer announced halftime Monte Vista had seen a 47-yard field goal sail left and were on the wrong end of a 13-0 game.  When they received the second half kick-off they grinded between the tackles for a 70 yard 13 play drive capped off with a Jacob Chavez touchdown to make it 13-7. Chavez got 10 touches and 60 yards en route to Monte Vista’s only score of the night.

It seemed like Monte Vista may have gotten themselves a prime opportunity to push ahead when Tyler Vigil flipped the field taking an interception over fifty yards to the Pagosa 28 yard line. Instead the offense would stall and 3 plays later they watched a 41-yard field goal also go wide of the mark to open the fourth quarter.

The ensuing drive Pagosa Springs would make it a two possession game with 7 minutes to play off a 5 yard touchdown by Ty Kimsey to make it 19-7. After Monte Vista put in on the ground Pagosa Springs would take the extra possession and put the game out of reach with a 12 yard rush from Cade Cowan to finalize the score at 26-17.

Monte Vista will take a road trip that will last until the aptly named Homecoming game on Oct. 27 against Dolores. Catch them on the road next week as they travel to Meeker to take on the #2 ranked 3-0 Meeker Cowboys
