Monte Vista food bank seeks donations

MONTE VISTA— What does hunger look like? In Colorado 41,204,000 people are struggling with hunger— and 12,938,00 are children. One in eight people struggle with hunger—one in six children. As the holiday season approaches, hunger is even more prevalent. The holidays are often stressful for a family that already struggles with hunger.

The Monte Vista Emergency Food bank feeds between 500-700 for Thanksgiving alone. Christmas usually brings 200-500 more people looking for help to feed their family. The food bank runs completely off the generosity of the community from churches, clubs, individuals and businesses.

They are asking for help this holiday season. The Monte Vista food bank has very specific needs for the holidays. The following are items included in the special holiday bags:

Half hams (loaf style), turkey (whole or breast), dressing (boxed), yams (canned), cranberries (canned), green beans, pumpkins (canned), evaporated milk or sweetened condensed milk, crushed pineapple, chicken broth (or cream of mushroom soup), cake mixes, Jello (boxed), olives

Please make sure food donations are unopened and not expired.

To donate, please contact Jennifer Becker, executive director at 852-4851 on Tuesdays and Fridays from 2-4 p.m. or drop off donations during these hours. The food bank is located at 245 Washington in Monte Vista.

Monetary donations are greatly appreciated as well. Please make checks payable to the Monte Vista Emergency Food Bank and mail to P.O. Box 844, Monte Vista 81144.
