Monte Vista heads east for game against Rocky Ford

ALAMOSA— Monte Vista is currently 4-3 with 2 wins in the Southern Peaks league in second place behind the Centauri Falcons, their opponent this week, Rocky Ford is 5-2 with two wins in their league and is currently in second place behind Crowley County.

The similarities stop there, the Meloneers run a fairly balanced attack 47 pass and 53 run though they excel through the air getting 61 percent of their yards and 16 of 25 touchdowns passing.

The Pirates are slanted a little more towards the run, handing it off on 86 percent of their recorded snaps with 13 of their 14 touchdowns coming on the ground.

The Meloneers are coming off a rout of winless Dolores Huerta Prep where they posted 58 points.  Rocky Ford typically relies on the arm of Isiah Garcia who has thrown for 738 yards at a 123 per game clip with eight touchdowns. But they also seem to use an alternate passer in Edgar Perez-Rodriguez. Perez-Rodriguez has thrown for 431 yards and gotten 8 touchdowns, 7 passing and 1 rushing and may look to come in in special sets and goal line situations.

The primary rusher for the Meloneers is Diego Reyes with 457 yards and 7 touchdowns. Reyes is a first down threat collecting 5.4 yards per carry.
On the flank David Trujillo boosts Rocky Ford at wide receiver. Trujillo has caught 10 of the Meloneers 16 touchdowns with 583 yards. At 5’5” the junior Trujillo doesn’t figure to be trying for jump balls instead with his longest reception going for 71 yards is more likely is a speedy elusive receiver that the Pirates will be well advised to keep tabs on.

When the Pirates have the ball look for the touches to go to Jacob Chavez who at 845 yards and 10 touchdowns accounts for better than 50 percent of Monte Vista’s offense and points.

Behind Chavez, Kaidon Wenta has begun to get a more expanded role in the offense with 88 yards rushing against Meeker and Ignacio with a touchdown in each and 3 passes for 12 yards against Meeker. All this added to his contribution to the receiving game where he currently leads the team going 8 for 69 yards and a touchdown.
Kickoff is this Saturday in Rocky Ford at 7 p.m.
