Monte Vista, La Junta wrestle to 30-30 draw

ALAMOSA – It came down to the final match of the night as the Monte Vista High School wrestling team hosted a dual meet against La Junta Thursday at the Pirates’ gym.

Nothing was settled between the Pirates and Tigers as the teams battled to a 30-30 tie.

Kevin Cisneros gave the Pirates the early lead as he received a forfeit win at 150 pounds.

Jacob Pacheco then increased the Monte Vista lead to 12-0 as he pinned Riggan Kinslow-Smart at 157. Pacheco trailed 10-0 going into the final period, but he took the top position to begin the stanza. He took advantage of his position and turned Kinslow-Smart onto his back and finished the fall in 4:40.

La Junta scored its first points of thje dual at 165 as Santos Nunez scored a 7-0 decision over Jeremiah Baumgardner to cut the Monte Vista lead to 12-3.

Dilan Ruiz then took a forfeit win at 175 to close the Pirates’ lead to 12-9.

There was no match at 190 pounds, but Matthew Wright scored a fall over Dallas Olague at 3:13 to push the Monte Vista lead to 18-9.

There was also no match at 285 pounds, but La Junta then took the next two matches by forfeit. Joseph Gamez took the win at 106 pounds, and after there was also no match at 113, Elijah Montalvan won by forfeit at 120 to give the Tigers a 21-18 lead.

Ethan Wolfe also won by forfeit at 126 to put Monte Vista back into the lead at 24-21.

La Junta regained the lead in the 132-pound match as Kaysen Collier pinned Jon Enderle in 57 seconds.

Another forfeit win, this time by Damian Lopez at 138, helped the Pirates take a 30-27 edge.

In the final match of the evening, the 144-pound bout, Julian Pacheco took a 5-2 lead over Davan Vigil. However, Vigil came back to tie the score at 7-7 after the second period. Vigil then scored a 3-point near-fall to take the match by a 10-7 decision.

Monte Vista’s next action will be at the Fowler Invitational on Saturday. The first matches begin at 9 a.m. at Grizzly Gym.

Girls action

There were also three girls matches between Monte Vista and La Junta on Thursday.

The first match was at 115 pounds as La Junta’s Haley Scofield pinned Aniya Torres just as the first period expired.

In the second match at 125, Torria Herrera pinned Conor Kinslow-Smart in 1:31.

The third match, the 140-pound match, was the only girls match not to be decided in the first period. Alyssa Campos pinned Faith Potter at the 2:39 mark.
