MONTE VISTA — Football in the San Luis Valley was in full swing Friday night and an old rivalry was back when #10 Monte Vista (1A) hosted Alamosa (2A).
These two teams last met in 2005 and Alamosa was victorious back then as well.  The crowd for the game was outstanding with plenty of fans making the trip from Alamosa west to Monte Vista.  Monte Vista won the coin toss, deferring to the second half.  Alamosa received the ball around the 30 yard line.  The opening drive for Alamosa had some early success but a 4th and 1 on the Alamosa side of the ball had the Moose feeling risky and a fourth down conversion was the result.  That play allowed Alamosa another few plays but a bad snap halted the opening dive for Alamosa.

Monte Vista's opening drive had very little success resulting in a 3 and out and handing the ball back over to Alamosa.  The Mean Moose's second drive began around the 50 yard line.  Two straight plays from Alamosa resulted in just 1 yard and it was 3 and 9 when Alamosa was able to finally strike.
Starting QB Brendon Madrill connected on a 49 yard pass to Austin Barrows for an Alamosa touchdown and the two point conversion was also good giving the Moose a  8-0 lead with 3:54 left in the 1st quarter.  The rest of the first quarter featured outstanding defense from both teams and neither team had much success offensively.  The second quarter followed suit maintaining the score to the tune of a 8-0 lead for  Alamosa at the half. Not only that but the Moose led in all offensive stats.

Brendon Madril at halftime had 45 yards rushing and 92 yards passing and 1 passing touchdown.  Ben Wuckert was also effective in the first half with 54 yards rushing.

For Monte Vista Kaidon Wenta had 14 yards rushing and Zach Hindes has 16 yards passing.  Monte Vista would receive the kick after halftime and showed some early success, but a low snap derailed the Pirates' drive and they had to punt.

Alamosa's first drive in the third quarter was very successful with a 57 yards rushing touchdown by Chad Jackson making the score 16-0.  It was Monte Vista's second drive of the third quarter that was their most successful.  Kaidon Wenta had 3 big runs totaling 44 yards and giving the Pirates their longest drive of the game.  However Alamosa's defense was able to stiffen and stop a 4th down conversion for the Pirates.

Alamosa would struggle on their next offensive possession but with their defense controlled the tempo maintained the rest of the third quarter.  In the fourth quarter both team's defense once again stiffed up.  Monte Vista defense was able to come up with a big turnover with 6:20 left in the fourth quarter but Alamosa defense stood tall and would control the game the rest of the way.

Alamosa punched in one more touchdown after blocking a punt and three straight running plays to make the score 24-0.
Alamosa's offense  was led by Chad Jackson who ran for 104 yards and 1 touchdown.  Brendon Madril also played well in his first start at QB passing for 93 yards, 1 touchdown, and rushing for 62 yards.

Monte Vista did have more success in the second half and Kaidon Wenta ended with 78 yards rushing.  Both teams played good defense all night but big plays by Alamosa were the difference in the game.  Next week both teams will be at home in key match ups.  Alamosa will host #2 La Junta which will be a huge measuring stick game for the Mean Moose.  #10 Monte Vista will host #7 Paonia and could be huge bounce back game for the Pirates.
