Motorway demolition gets initial approval

ALAMOSA  The Alamosa Local Marketing District and Tourism Board is close to reaching a contract for the demolition of the Motorway Building.

During the board’s Thursday night meeting, two proposals for demolition were opened.

The first proposal came from Cooley and Sons Excavating for the amount of $59,000. The second came from RMS Utilities for $137,872.

After a brief period of discussion, members determined that both proposals met the requirements put forth by the board. Members also expressed surprise at the difference in costs. However, both bids turned out to be lower than expected as original estimates projected that a demolition project would cost over $200,000.

There has also been uncertainty regarding the availability of grant monies for the project from the Colorado Department of Local Affairs.

As a result, the board was pleased with the estimates presented.

Following the discussion, board member, Liz Hensley made a motion to enter negotiations with Cooley and Sons Excavating.

The motion carried unanimously.

Following the passage of the action item, Alamosa Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director, Kale Mortensen, was directed to begin the next steps in the negotiation process.

A final agreement has not yet been reached and further details will be released soon.
