NGBC announces new Alternative Economies Book Club

As spring slowly approaches, there is no better way to distract from the lingering chill than joining a book club! Narrow Gauge Book Cooperative (NGBC) now hosts a new Alternative Economies book club.

This group will meet every other month with the hopes to critically understand our current economic system and review alternative proposals that support healthy community and ecosystems. On Tuesday, March 26, from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m., NGBC invites the public to a discussion of “Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered” by E.F. Schumacher.

“Small is Beautiful: Economics as if People Mattered” is written by an Oxford-trained economist who calls for the end of excessive consumption. Schumacher is credited for inspiring the Buy Local and Fair Trade movements, as well as openly opposing casino capitalism and waste corporate giants. The “Times Literary Supplement “named this title one of the 100 Most Influential Books Since World War II. Small is Beautiful presents the argument that economies must be built according to the needs of communities, rather than those of corporations.

Each book club at NGBC features a different title chosen by the NGBC team that can be purchased at the bookstore for 10 percent off. Titles explore different genres and types of literature. Enjoy engaging discussion, a delicious potluck, and a wonderful book.

Book club takes place at NGBC on 602 Main Street.
