NGBC celebrates Dr. Seuss’ birthday

ALAMOSA — Narrow Gauge Book Coop (NGBC) will host a birthday celebration for children’s book writer Dr. Suess on Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. This event will feature treats, activities, and a Dr. Suess-themed costume party.

Theodor Seuss Geisel began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for several publications, including “Vanity Fair and Life” magazine. His first children’s book, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street,” was published in 1937. During World War II, Dr. Seuss took a break from children’s literature and illustrated political cartoons and worked in the animation and film department of the U.S. Army. He resumed writing children’s books after World War II and went on to publish over 60 books during his career, spawning film, television, and Broadway adaptations, as well as a theme park based around his fanciful works. Dr. Suess’s birthday, March 2nd, was adopted as National Read Across America Day by the National Education Association.

Dr. Suess’s children’s books are popular choices for early literacy, as the fanciful cadences, wacky story lines, and nonsense words contribute to memory recall, the ability to manipulate sounds when creating words, and the sheer joy of reading. Few among us are unable to recite our favorite lines from Dr. Suess’s stories. Relive your childhood memories of his books, dress up, and embraces the strangeness of his legacy by joining NGBC at their location on 602 Main Street in Alamosa this Saturday, March 2, to partake in the celebration of Dr. Suess and his vibrant legacy.
