NWS issues flood warning

VALLEY – As the snow from the mountains continues to melt, the Rio Grande continues to expand its banks. The Rio Grande had risen in South Fork, Del Norte and Monte Vista the National Weather Service in Pueblo has issued a Flood Warning for June 12 at 10:37 a.m. for Mineral and Rio Grande counties.

Emergency management reported flooding throughout the Rio Grande and San Juan drainage basins in Mineral and western Rio Grande Counties and include Del Norte, South Fork, Creede and Wagon Wheel Gap.

High water has now reaching Alamosa and is causing minor flooding on the east side of town.

Meanwhile, in Rio Grande and Mineral counties, the river is still closed to recreation and water sports. According to Linette Nye Schmidt, public information officer of South Fork Fire Rescue, as of June 12, the river has now exceeded the peak flow that was observed June 8

The following closures continue Rio Grande Drive, just North of County Road 19 bridge and County Road 18, north of the river to County Road 15

Voluntary evacuation continues for the Lower campground at Woods & River and the RV Park & Campground in Del Norte.

Mineral County and the Rio Grande National Forest are reporting the following closures:

Alamosa Canyon Road (NFSR 250), above Jasper, East Willow above North Creede, Park Creek campground, Del Norte Riverwalk Trail, and Park Creek Road (National Forest Service Road 380).
