Olance revitalizes Valley history

ALAMOSA — San Luis Valley history is far from dead with Kat Olance as the president of the SLV Museum Association.

In a recent update to the Alamosa city council Olance talked about accomplishments and goals for the museum association as well as the SLV Tourism Association, of which she is now president.

The museum association just released a new brochure, which features the 17 museums in the San Luis Valley. Museums in Lake City and La Veta are also members of the Valley’s association.

Future projects include a Craft Tour Workshop, which would focus on culture and heritage, with funding pending for that event, and farther down the line perhaps hosting a historical convention for the first time in the Valley. Olance said the conference would bring in 200-300 folks from Colorado and Wyoming as part of the Colorado-Wyoming Association of Museums. The group has never held its convention in the Valley since its inception in 1973 and is interested in holding the convention in a rural area, Olance explained.

“The museum association has a lot going on,” Olance told the council.

The tourism association is just as busy. It will be hosting a conference on February 21, 2019, with Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Executive Director Chris Castilian as the featured speaker. The Valley has benefited from millions of GOCO dollars over the years, Olance said.

The tourism group is also reprinting maps and received a grant recently to do so, Olance said.

“I know how hard you have been working,” Alamosa City Councilor Liz Hensley told Olance. “Kat has done an awesome job as president.” She said Olance has worked hard to acquire grants and schedule events.

Councilor Kristina Daniel added, “I appreciate what you are doing.”

On the museum topic, Hensley said a group of her students from Adams State a few years ago conducted a research project on area museums and their impact on the community.
