OMS wins soccer championship

ALAMOSA — The OMS soccer team had an incredible spring season in Pueblo.

After winning the championships in the middle league last season the team decided to move to the upper league this season. The OMS soccer team went undefeated with six wins and two ties in the regular season, an unbelievable record, especially since on two of the Saturdays they had to play three games!

Finishing the season in first place they played the fourth place team in the semifinals on May 20. They came in pumped up and ready to play. They dominated the game and won with a score of 3 - 0.

Then it was time for the finals. Half time score was 0-0. Cody Gonzalez made a save and Alex Esteban was a stand out as sweeper. He was not letting anything by him! In the second half Josh Curry dribbled around the goalie and shot. The ball was going in the goal, so the only thing the defender could do was block it with her hand. Handball in the box! Austin Blankenship stepped up to take the penalty kick and made it! Austin’s leadership skills, and incredible composure in high pressure situations, made him a great captain this season! That would be the one and only goal of the finals. OMS takes the championship with a score of 1 - 0!

“I could not be anymore proud of this team as a whole,” said Coach Kelly Wubben. “They came together and worked so hard for each other! We will miss the eighth graders next season, but I look forward to the younger ones stepping up. Best of luck Austin Blankenship, Josh Curry, Brigiba Fransico, Alex Esteban, Noah Kelly, Lauren Manzanares, Jose Pineda and Quinn Russell. Can’t wait to see what you guys do at the high school level!”
