Orlando T. ‘Shad’ Mondragon, 95

ALAMOSA — Orlando T. “Shad” Mondragon, 95 years old, and a resident of Alamosa, passed away on the 24th of January, 2020 at the San Luis Valley Health Regional Medical Center.  He was born Oct. 9, 1924 in Taos, N.M., to Alejandro and Maria Mondragon. 

He served his country for a term of four years in the United States Navy during World War II.  His position in the Navy was a Machinist’s Mate Third Class, Construction Battalion (CB) USN-I. 

He worked for McIntyre and Cody Construction Company for many years.  His hobbies and interests included camping, fishing, hunting, woodworking, boxing, wrestling, traveling, listening to music and numerous other activities.

Orlando’s primary focus and the love of his life was his wife of 73 years, Benita, and their children, Alex, June, Nancey, Orlinda, Connie and Marilyn. 

Orlando is survived by his daughters, June Encinias Fuqua, Nancey Mondragon, Connie Lee and Marilyn Mondragon; as well as 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, one great-great granddaughter and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his spouse, Benita A. Mondragon; his father, and mother; Alejandro and Maria Mondragon; his son, Alex Mondragon; his daughter, Orlinda D. Ruybal (Mondragon); his granddaughter, Kanda Toogood; and his sister ,Isabel Medina.

A vigil with recitation of the rosary will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, 2020 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa.  A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, Jan.  31, also at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa, with Father Sergio Robles, C.R. officiating.  Interment will follow services with military honors in the Alamosa Cemetery.
