Pair of Sunday incidents result in fatality

Local law enforcement and emergency personnel  had their hands full on Sunday  with two crashes. Both crashes took place within an hour  of one another.

At 3:14 p.m. Colorado State Patrol (CSP) responded to a rollover crash on Highway 160 west of South Fork in Mineral County.  The vehicle was on its top blocking both westbound lanes of traffic.

The westbound vehicle, driven by a 46 year old woman from Longmont, traveled off the westbound edge of the roadway where it struck a concrete barricade.  The vehicle rotated traveling broadside in the roadway before rolling over onto its top.  The vehicle slid to final rest in the roadway.  The driver had swerved to avoid a rock falling into the roadway.

The driver of the vehicle was transported to a local hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and released.

At 4:16 p.m., CSP and deputies from the Rio Grande Sheriff’s Office (RGSO) responded to an ATV crash on Forest Road 330 west of Forest Road 14.  The ATV operator, a 70 year old man from Missouri, was pronounced dead at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

Investigation revealed the ATV was traveling westbound when it went out of control and rolled, ejecting the operator.  Both came to rest in the roadway.

No helmet was in use.  The incident is still under investigation.
