Pappy’s Place Gallery opens in Creede

...

CREEDE -- There is a new gallery in Creede in an old familiar landmark. Artists Susan McCullough and David Montgomery have named their new venture Pappy’s Place Gallery in acknowledgement of the historic structure at 128 Main Street that was a residence to Pappy and Annie Fairchild for decades.

“The building next the Creede Repertory Theater was known as Pappy’s Place for a long time so we thought it was an easy choice to make,” states McCullough. The domicile has had numerous incarnations after the Fairchilds passed, from burger hut to bead shop to fine art gallery.

Pappy’s Place Gallery will feature landscape paintings of the Creede area, the San Juan Mountains and the Southwest.

McCullough and Montgomery are both accomplished artists that have been painting in the Creede area for decades.

Susan McCullough has received many awards for her on-location works, known also as plein air. After studying art in college she attended numerous workshops with some of the most talented oil painters in America. A Colorado native, McCullough lives near Monte Vista and outside of Creede.

Montgomery is a well-known Alamosa artist and has been painting the San Luis Valley and surrounding mountains for decades. He recalls that he started painting the Creede area in art camp when he was fifteen. Montgomery received a BFA in painting from CSU. He was honored as the featured artist at the 2021 Taste of Creede Art and Cuisine Festival and is a veteran of the Quick Draw event.

McCullough and Montgomery are members of the Plein Air Artists of Colorado (PAAC) as well as Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM). McCullough is signature member of the PAPNM. She is also represented in Taos, New Mexico at the Wilder Nightingale Gallery.

Montgomery’s art can also be seen at his studio and Firedworks Gallery, both in Alamosa.

McCullough and Montgomery extend their welcome to visit Pappy’s Place Gallery at 128 Main Street in Creede Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm.

The gallery will also be a stop along the Silver Thread Studio Tour on Saturday, August 14. As part of the studio tour weekend McCullough and Montgomery will be painting on site Friday, August 13 as well as Saturday.
